ANNOUNCEMENTS -----No Photo IDs on 28 July The photo service for UCAR identification cards will not be available Thursday 28 July. If you have questions, contact Liz Kriete, ext. 8542. -----Send In Your Telephone Questions Are there aspects of the UCAR telephone system and PhoneMail answering system that puzzle you? In a future Staff Notes article, we'll explain how these systems work and offer tips on how to use the phone and PhoneMail most effectively. If you have a question you'd like addressed, please forward it to Harry Hiebert (ML), ext. 1121, e-mail hiebert@ncar.ucar.edu. -----Try Tai Chi This Summer and Fall Introductory tai chi class will be offered again starting Thursday, 28 July. Tai chi is an ancient Chinese system of ballet-like calisthenics. The exercise is done slowly and emphasizes relaxation. It is a rythmical and fluid art that stresses slow breathing, balanced and relaxed postures, and calmness of mind. While there is no set duration for the introductory class, about three to four months are required to cover Professor Cheng Man-ching's 37-posture form (the complete series of movements). Gerry Wiener (RAP) will be teaching free of charge. Class size is limited, so sign up soon. Class Location: FL fitness center Days and Times: Tuesday, Thursday 4:30--5:15 p.m. Sign-up: Call or e-mail Celia Chen, ext. 8452, celia@ncar.ucar.edu -----Reminder: One-Plus Dialing Starts on 1 August Users of the UCAR telephone system will need to dial 9 + 1 + [area code] + [7-digit number] when placing long-distance calls, beginning on 1 August. After this date, users can no longer dial 9 + [area code] + [7- digit number]. No change will occur in the procedure for local calls. If you have questions, contact Teresa Shibao, ext. 8510. -----Excitement Ensues at Elitch's on 5 August The Employee Activities Committee is sponsoring the following discount. UCAR and the EAC do not endorse or recommend any product or service. Bring your family and friends to Elitch Gardens Amusement Park in Denver for fun and games on Friday, 5 August. The EAC has secured a special group discount rate, giving you an unlimited ride pass for just $9.75 ($6.00 for children age 3 or younger). This is a significant savings over the regular admission rate. Gate passes are available for $6.00 for those who want to attend but don't want to go on the rides. This is Elitch's last year at its current location and not all the rides will be making the move to downtown Denver next year. This will be your last chance to ride the historic Mister Twister, one of the few remaining wooden coasters, as it now stands. Other rides also will be eliciting their final screams--come get queasy on your favorites. Once again the EAC has reserved the River House Pavilion and will be firing up the grills so that you can char your favorite meat and nonmeat comestibles (bring your own grillables, please). We will also be providing free pop and beer (with proper ID) from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. This year tickets must be purchased in advance. Tickets, name tags, and maps are available at the Foothills and Mesa Lab bank windows and from Judy Wade at Jeffco. The EAC hopes to see you and your family at Elitch's. -----New Hires Michele Betsill, graduate research assistant with ESIG. FL2 carrel 2020, ext. 8122. Steven Carson, student assistant III with CGD.
