UNITED WAY SPOTLIGHT JOANNE DUNNEBECKE AND COMMUNITY FOOD SHARE Staff Notes is featuring staff members who have volunteered for or been helped by United Way-supported agencies in Boulder County. UCAR employees can help local charitable agencies not only by pledging monetary support, but also by volunteering their time. Joanne Dunnebecke, administrator in the Research Applications Program, has been doing that for several years by working with Community Food Share. Grocery stores, bakeries, restaurants, and gardeners give excess food to Community Food Share that would otherwise be discarded. CFS also organizes teams to glean remaining vegetables from Boulder County farms after harvest, and it runs the local Thanksgiving food drive. It also handled the food collected in a recent drive by mail carriers. What happens with all this food? Community Food Share sorts it, warehouses it, and provides it to over 90 agencies in Boulder County that in turn give the food to people in need. Meals on Wheels, Emergency Family Assistance, preschools, and shelters are among those agencies. Most of the work of Community Food Share is done by volunteers like Joanne. Over the years she has worked in the Thanksgiving food drive, gleaned, helped to grow vegetables in the CFS community garden, worked at an outreach table at the downtown farmers' market, and assisted with the annual pancake-breakfast fund raisers sponsored by Alfalfa's. "One of the nice things about Community Food Share is that you can volunteer for a few hours at a time and harvest food or help raise funds and feel that you've made a valuable contribution to the program," says Joanne. She would like to organize a group from UCAR to glean fields in late summer and early fall and encourages interested persons to contact her at ext. 8431, e-mail dunnebec@ncar.ucar.edu. -Art Richmond, United Way Committee -----This Week's Winners Each week during this year's campaign, the United Way Committee will be drawing names for prizes from among pledge forms returned by staff.
