BOULDER BIKE WEEK IS HERE Over 7,000 people will be participating in Boulder Bike Week 16-24 July, including dozens--perhaps even hundreds--of UCAR staff. Free food, mechanical and logistical assistance, and a chance at prizes have been arranged by the Transportation Alternatives Group to get people commuting on two wheels next week. "This year TAP's goal is to get UCAR staff riding throughout Bike Week rather than our just promoting heavy participation on Bike to Work Day," says Joanne Dunnebecke, cochair of TAP and one of the Bike Week organizers. "Bike to Work Day is a terrific event that inspires people to try bicycle commuting for a day. Our hope, of course, is that if you try it you'll like it, and if you like it, you'll choose to get on your bike in the morning instead of climbing into your car." Below is a summary of the Bike Week activities going on around UCAR through next week. A wide range of city-sponsored events-- including a potluck supper, a bike-to-market day with 10% discounts on groceries, a seniors' ride, and a full moon ride--is listed in the Bike Week guide, available at the reception areas for each building. If you'd like to try biking to work but are unsure about the fastest or most bike- friendly route, send e-mail to trans-alt@ncar.ucar.edu and TAG will help you find the best way to your work site. -BH -----BIKE WEEK ACTIVITIES AT UCAR/NCAR/UOP All week: Interdivisional Challenge Which division or program can rack up the most bicycle commuter points? Every day that you ride to work during Bike Week, sign the form by your building's entrance. Each day's commute is worth ten points, plus one point per mile of your round-trip distance, with three extra points if you bike up the mesa road. Total points for each division will be divided by number of employees, so that large and small divisions and programs have an equal chance. The winning group and the top point-getters will be announced in Staff Notes. Each day you commute by bike also gets you one entry into a drawing for three $50 gift certificates from Full Cycle in Boulder. Monday, 18 July: Kick-off Breakfast Kick off Bike Week with a free breakfast for all cycle commuters: scrambled eggs, hash browns, pancakes, fruit, muffins, juice, milk, tea, and coffee. Just show your bicycle. ML: Former fountain plaza FL: Between Buildings 1 and 2 Wednesday, July 20: Bike to Work Day Cycling staff can eat for free at one of the many breakfast stations around town (including the UCAR-staffed station near FL at 47th and Mitchell). Don't forget to put your name on the sign-up sheet at your building's entrance to help us compete in the Business Challenge!
