Turning
off the juice

When Jaime Shuey (SaSS) leaves for the day, she likes to
turn off unnecessary lights as she walks out of the Mesa
Lab.
Now she’s teaming up with Dan Ziskin (ACD) and Karl
Hanzel (COMET) of the Environmental Stewardship Program to
urge staffers throughout the organization to keep energy
conservation in mind. The trio is distributing stickers for
light switches and computers that say, “When not in
use, turn off the juice.” Staffers who want to commit
to conserving electricity and using alternative transportation
can also download pledge forms from a Web page (see On the
Web).
“By saving energy in the workplace, we can reduce our
impact on the planet, save UCAR money, and conserve resources
for future generations,” Dan says.
The program is based on a CU initiative that reduced energy
use at that institution.
“It’s just the little things you do every day
that make a difference when you add them up,” Karl
says.
Staffers who are interested in learning more can call
a new energy conservation hotline at ext. 6422 or e-mail
conserve@ucar.edu.
