A SOARS summer

UCAR's nationally recognized Significant Opportunities in Atmospheric Research and Science (SOARS) program has enrolled a record number of protégés this year: 28. The undergraduates are wrapping up their 10-week paid internships after conducting research projects with scientists at NCAR and other institutions. Dozens of volunteers worked with SOARS staff to provide the protégés with mentoring support on scientific research, scientific writing, leadership, and community life issues. The protégés will present their research findings at the SOARS Colloquium, a series of seminars taking place at the Mesa and Foothills Labs 11-13 August. Check the calendar section of This Week at UCAR for details on each talk. For more on SOARS, see www.ucar.edu/soars.

MMM’s Charles Knight and protégé Erick Adame examine photos of frost crystals that were grown in a laboratory.

Leslie Hartten (CIRES/NOAA Aeronomy Lab) and protégé Melissa Burt discuss wind profiling radars at NOAA’s Platteville Atmospheric Observatory.

Protégé Matt Coleman learns about a dropsonde humidity sensor from ATD’s Junhong Wang.

Protégé Pauline Datulayta and her mentor, CGD’s Warren Washington, look at images of wavelets (mathematical representations of data) as part of a project to verify whether the Parallel Climate Model is accurately simulating climate change.
