No, Wendy Abshire of COMET isnt in line to fly the space shuttleeven though thats her in the pilot seat of the shuttle mockup used for training astronauts in the Johnson Space Center. Wendy visited the space center this winter during the nine-day NASA Educators Workshop, a program to help science and museum educators learn more about teaching the public about earth and space science. Highlights included constructing a robot, talking live with the crew on the International Space Station, and watching the movie Apollo 13 in old Mission Control with former Apollo 13 astronaut Fred Haise. Wendys participation was part of an E&O initiative to learn more about educational programs by other agencies. We see this as a way to inform ourselves about whos doing what and opportunities for future collaboration to further enrich our program, says E&Os Susan Foster. If Wendys experience at the NASA workshop is any guide, science teachers could be an enthusiastic audience for new E&O programs. Their thirst for meteorological information was really high, Wendy says. There was nearly as much passion for learning about meteorology as there was about space. David Hosansky |
