SCD computer operator Melissa Breedlove was elected Commuter of
the Year 2000 for Boulder County and honored at a luncheon on 17
May at the YMCA in Boulder. Melissa was nominated by a colleague
who'd been impressed by Melissa's commitment to commuting by bus.
"I really don't like driving in city traffic," Melissa explains,
"so I'll do anything to avoid it." Melissa, who grew up in Buena
Vista ("I'm not really a native; I moved there when I was five"),
learned to drive in the wide-open spaces of southern Colorado. "I
got my driver's license when I was sixteen and a half, then I
joined the Navy at seventeen. After five years in the
Navyfirst in Washington, D.C., and then in London, both of
which have excellent bus and subway systemsI had to learn to
drive all over again," says Melissa. When she joined UCAR 18 years
ago, she immediately joined a carpool, then moved to where a bus
commute was feasible. Melissa now lives in Longmont and takes the
RTD's "J" bus to Table Mesa and Broadway, where she catches the
shuttle to the Mesa Lab. "At the moment, I'm taking my turn on the
weekend shift, so I have to drive Saturdays and Sundays. But as
soon as I rotate back to a more normal shift, back to the bus I'll
go."
