| Decades of friendship and teamwork were revisited on 9 October. The High Altitude Observatory celebrated its 60th anniversary with a banquet that reunited dozens of former HAO staff, including some who had joined HAO in the 1940s and 1950s. The gathering included (counterclockwise from lower left) Virginia Lincoln, formerly with the National Bureau of Standards; Joe Rush, HAO's second Ph.D. scientist; Evelyn Rush; Rudy Cook, who helped develop the Sacramento Peak Observatory site in 1947; Med Medrud, long-time HAO and NCAR administrator; Shirley Hanson; and Dick Hanson, who carried out observations and analyses of the solar corona from Climax and Mauna Loa. More coverage of the 60th anniversary of HAO and,the 40th of UCAR/NCAR is in this issue. (Photos by Carlye Calvin.) |
