For cycling with a purpose beyond fitness and fun, a number of
staff have formed UCAR teams for pledge rides. The Employee
Activities Committee subsidizes up to 75% of your entry fees (but
not pledges) when you form a UCAR team for a
walking/running/cycling pledge event. This year's UCAR teams have
participated in the Community Classic Bike Tour (21 May in
Loveland) and the MS150 (Denver to Cañon City, 89
July). Members and friends of the MS150 Team UCAR included (from
left) Pat and John (ATD) Militzer, Barbara Middlebrook, Joe and
Margaret VanAndel, Russ Rew, Rick Anthes, and Andy Heymsfield.
Inset: Thierry Corbard (HAO) and Becky Ruttenberg (RAP). Not
pictured are Chris Conklin (FSS) and Al Bourgeois (MMM). Team
captain Jack Fellows (UOP) was foiled for the second year in a
rowin 1999 by a broken ankle, this time by an intestinal
bug. See Becky's
full report on the MS150 ride. A loosely organized group of cyclists has been doing informal circuits of 15 to 25 miles during the Wednesday Lunch Rides (not officially sponsored by EAC or UCAR). Two options are available each week, according to coordinator José Castilleja (MMM): a one-hour, "pure leisure" ride and an advanced ride, typically including one good climb (such as Old Stage Road, Flagstaff, or Lee Hill) or a flat high-speed track. To get on an e-mail notification list, contact José (ext. 8998, castille@ucar.edu). More details on UCAR/NCAR cycling can be found on the Web. Meanwhile, the EAC's first all-staff hike, held after work on 26 July, was a hit. About 20 staff joined EAC representative Sean Burns on a 2.2-mile round-trip hike that wound behind the Mesa Lab and up to Mallory Cave. The EAC hopes to sponsor more such hikes; write to eac-members@ucar.edu if you'd like to help out.
