Portrait of a SOARS summer

The 23 protégés of the Significant Opportunities in Atmospheric Research and Science program on site this summer are winding up their stays in Boulder. Their findings will be presented at the SOARS Colloquium, a series of seminars taking place at the Mesa and Foothills Labs, 4–9 August. Summer Sands (left) compares notes with solar researcher Mark Rast. "I like my project because we are trying to answer a very specific question: are supergranules convection? It's exciting to know that this research might contribute to a better understanding of the solar dynamo, and at the very least, a better understanding of the enigmatic supergranule."

He has given me a lot of incentive to conduct the research under my own expectations. Lee has also given me the choice to make my own interpretations of the research. We complement each other well.
