Portrait of a SOARS summer

The 23 protégés of the Significant Opportunities in Atmospheric Research and Science program on site this summer are winding up their stays in Boulder. Their findings will be presented at the SOARS Colloquium, a series of seminars taking place at the Mesa and Foothills Labs, 4–9 August. Check the of This Week at UCAR, calendar section for details on each talk. The schedule is also available on the SOARS Web site, under "SOARS 2000 Colloquium Schedule." •

Kevin Green samples the depth of Boulder Creek's headwaters in the Indian Peaks Wilderness. "I think the research that I've conducted this summer in limnology, comparing streambed mobility with invertebrate abundance, has been a worthwhile experience. Through working with my science research mentors, I gained insight, knowledge, and a broader understanding of science." (Photos by Carlye Calvin.)

Summer Sands (left) compares notes with solar researcher Mark Rast. "I like my project because we are trying to answer a very specific question: are supergranules convection? It's exciting to know that this research might contribute to a better understanding of the solar dynamo, and at the very least, a better understanding of the enigmatic supergranule."

With Kevin Petty (right), returning protégé Jonathan Vigh is exploring a fuzzy-logic system to predict the intensity of hurricanes and tropical storms across the eastern Pacific Ocean.

Examining forest biomass are Shaan Bliss (left) and research mentor Lee Klinger. "My relationship with [Lee] has grown a lot since last summer. He has given me a lot of incentive to conduct the research under my own expectations. Lee has also given me the choice to make my own interpretations of the research. We complement each other well. He trusts me to get the work done on time and keep on top of things."
