Al R. Kellie has been appointed the new director of NCAR's Scientific Computing Division, replacing Bill Buzbee, who retired in September. Kellie began work on 30 November.

Kellie was previously senior director of the Canadian Meteorological Centre in Dorval, Quebec, and, at the same time, director of the center's Computer and Telecommunications Branch, which he describes as a "scientific computational center involved in operations and research in atmospheric sciences that is not very dissimilar to NCAR." The Computer and Telecommunications Branch serves 5,000 Environment Canada staff in 80 offices across the country. Systems range from Origin 2000 and NEC SX-4 supercomputers to scientific workstations.

"We are extremely fortunate to have Al Kellie join us," says Richard Anthes, president of UCAR. "With his strong background in both atmospheric sciences and computing, he is exceptionally well qualified to take the critical position of SCD director."
