UCAR Visiting Research Program: 1993 appointments 1994 deadlines for application are 15 March and 15 September The UCAR Visiting Research Program provides research opportunities at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Science Center at Camp Springs, Maryland. It offers visiting appointments for senior and postdoctoral scientists in the atmospheric and related sciences, and in remote sensing, at two of the premier research and development centers in the world devoted to operational weather and climate prediction, and space-based remote sensing of the earth: NOAA's National Meteorological Center (NMC) and National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS). Listed below are the name and home institution of the 1993 appointees (host institution for all of them is NMCÕs Development Division). Postdoctoral appointments Fei Chen, Rutgers University William Gallus, Colorado State University Ying Lin, Florida State University Izuru Takayabu, Meteorological Research Institute, Ibaraki, Japan Special Visitors Stephen Brenner, Israel National Institute of Oceanography S.K. Esbensen, Oregon State University Zavisa Janjic, University of Belgrade, Yugoslavia Graduate Research Assistants Zhaoxia Pu, Lanzhou University, PeopleÕs Republic of China JosŽ Vergara, Universidad de Chile, Santiago 1994 appointments 1994 deadlines for application to the program are 15 March and 15 September. Appointments will be for up to two years. There is no application form. Qualified scientists should submit a resume and a statement of how their research interests and experience relate to the areas of scientific interest at NMC and NESDIS. They should include a brief description of proposed work and an estimate of computer and/or other resource requirements. All applications should include the names and addresses of four professional references, and applicants are urged to encourage their referees to submit letters in support of the application. Appointments are made twice a year from applications submitted by March 15 and September 15. Send required information or applications to Meg Austin, UCAR Office of Programs. For further information, call 303- 497-8649 or send e-mail to B.APPELHANS (OMNET) or bappelha@ncar.ucar.edu (Internet). NMC is the U.S. civilian center for numerical weather prediction, climate monitoring and prediction, and hurricane and severe storm forecasting. Research and development within NMC is carried out principally by the Development Division, the Climate Analysis Center, and the Coupled Model Project, with some activities involving the Meteorological Operations Division (MOD), the National Severe Storms Forecast Center (NSSFC) in Kansas City, Missouri, and the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami, Florida. Research in the Development Division is directed toward the improvement of global and regional atmospheric models, ocean wave models, and analysis and initialization systems. The Climate Analysis Center conducts research aimed at improved monthly and seasonal forecasting and the monitoring of global climate anomalies. The Coupled Model Project includes research intended to develop and apply coupled general circulation models of the ocean and the atmosphere to the prediction of seasonal to interannual climate variations. Development work in MOD, NSSFC, and NHC is directed toward the implementation of improved forecasting techniques. NESDIS operates NOAA's polar and geosynchronous environmental satellites. Research activities are carried out primarily by the Satellite Research Laboratory (polar satellites), and the Satellite Applications Laboratory (geosynchronous satellites).
