UCAR Visiting Research Program: Applications due 15 September UCAR is inviting applications for its Visiting Research Program for Senior and Postdoctoral Scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Science Center at Camp Springs, Maryland. The program offers visiting research appointments in the atmospheric and related sciences, and in remote sensing, at NOAA's National Meteorological Center (NMC) and National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS). Applications are due 15 September. NMC is the civilian center in the United States for numerical weather prediction, climate monitoring and prediction, and hurricane and severe storm forecasting. Research and development within NMC is carried out principally by the Development Division (which aims to improve global and regional atmospheric models, ocean wave models, and analysis and initialization systems); the Climate Analysis Center (which works to improve monthly and seasonal forecasting and the monitoring of global climate anomalies); and the Coupled Model Project (which includes efforts to develop and apply coupled general circulation models of the ocean and the atmosphere to the prediction of seasonal to interannual climate variations). There are also some activities involving the Meteorological Operations Division; the National Severe Storms Forecast Center in Kansas City, Missouri; and the National Hurricane Center in Coral Gables, Florida. Development work in these facilities is directed toward the implementation of improved forecasting techniques. NESDIS operates NOAA's polar and geosynchronous environmental satellites. Research activities are carried out primarily by the Satellite Research Laboratory, which focuses on polar satellite applications, and the Satellite Applications Laboratory, which deals with geosynchronous satellite applications. Openings in the UCAR program include positions for senior and postdoctoral scientists. In addition, there are positions for graduate students working on doctoral research programs. Remuneration will be commensurate with the experience of the scientists and local living costs, and will be competitive with analogous university and government appointments. Appointments will be for up to two years. There is no application form. Qualified candidates are encouraged to apply by sending a resume and a statement of how their research interests and experience relate to the areas of scientific interest at NMC and NESDIS. Applicants should include a brief description of proposed work and an estimate of computer and/or other resource requirements. All applications should include the names and addresses of four professional references, and if possible, letters from them in support of the application. Applications for the graduate student positions should be initiated by the sponsoring senior scientist, with prior consultation with the staff at NMC and NESDIS. Appointments are made twice a year, from applications submitted by 15 March and 15 September, upon review and recommendation by a selection committee. Send applications to Meg Austin, UCAR Office of Programs.
