MembersÕ Representatives: HereÕs your chance to debate university directions In a novel approach to this fallÕs UCAR annual meeting, attendees will be asked to pool their thoughts on external factors shaping the future of UCAR universities. This theme constitutes the issues portion of the meeting, which gathers representatives from all 60 UCAR member institutions, as well as affiliated undergraduate institutions. Plans for this part of the meeting are being made by a committee appointed by UCAR president Richard Anthes. Committee members are: Timothy Spangler, UCAR Cooperative Program for Operational Meteorology, Education and Training; Robert Gall, NCAR Mesoscale and Microscale Meteorology Division; Marsha Baker, University of Washington; Ellen Mosley-Thompson, Ohio State University; and Edward Zipser, Texas A&M University. Before the meeting each attendee will sign up for a group focusing on topics such as --Conflict between research and education--Is it real? --The comprehensive university--Is it practical? --Improving university outreach to K-12 education and the public. --Atmospheric scientists--abundance or shortfall? Each group leader is preparing a position paper to begin the discussion. Each group will present to the full assembly their suggestions for how universities should respond to the forces theyÕve discussed. The result will be a useful body of ideas that can help guide UCAR universities over the next few years. More details on the groups and topics will be contained in the information packets that are mailed to attendees before the meeting. Sessions will convene at NCAR at about 11:00 a.m. on 12 October 1993 and continue through 13 October. Questions or suggestions for the meeting may be directed to Spangler or his committee members, or to Harriet Barker for the regular business portions of the meeting.
