Spring 2000

Faculty hydrometeorology course offered by COMET and PAGE

University faculty are invited to apply for one of 18 spots in a course on hydrometeorology, offered the week of 12-16 June. The course will cover the state of the art in hydrometeorological observation and forecasting and will provide hands-on experience. Two UCAR programs, the Cooperative Program for Operational Meteorology, Education and Training (COMET) and the Program for the Advancement of Geoscience Education (PAGE), are the sponsors.

During the course, experts will provide morning lectures on different hydrometeorology topics. Afternoon sessions will be devoted primarily to lab activities, using COMET workstations, that focus on the lecture topics of the morning. A field trip to three hydrologic sites (an urban flood, a canyon disaster, and a dam break) will add real-world examples. Participants will also discuss societal issues related to flood warnings. After the course, they are encouraged to engage in a follow-up project to develop hydrometeorology instructional materials for their own and other faculty's courses.

Ken Crawford (University of Oklahoma), Matt Kelsch, and Greg Byrd (both of COMET) organized the course, with help from Mary Marlino of PAGE. COMET covers the cost of tuition and lodging; students must provide a $50 registration fee and pay their own travel costs.

To apply, send a letter stating your interest in the course; a two-page curriculum vita including a list of courses you have taught; and a description of your department's relevant course(s), detailing your access to hydrometeorological data sources, to Greg Byrd, UCAR/COMET, P.O. Box 3000; Boulder, CO 80307-3000 (fax 303-497-8491). The deadline is 15 April; those selected will be notified by 1 May. If you have any questions, contact Crawford (405-325-2541 or kcrawford@ou.edu) or Byrd (303-497-8537 or byrd@comet.ucar.edu).
