Computer time available at National Centers for Environmental Prediction Application deadline: 1 September 1994 The National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), in Camp Springs, Maryland, is providing its computing facility to enhance the national effort to develop improved dynamical models for better climate forecasts. NCEP is providing 50% of its CRAY YMP/8 for the extramural research and development community (including non- NCEP investigators) to use for major efforts relevant to, and supportive of, operational seasonal-to-interannual climate forecasting. There are two application deadlines per year: 1 September and 1 March. A computing advisory panel will assess the relevance, scope, and quality of proposed efforts and make recommendations to the director of NCEP within one month of the deadline. Approved projects will begin on 15 October and 15 April. Application process Applications should be one page in length and consist of -- a brief description of the peer-reviewed research proposal to which the work will contribute (including the identity of the funding agency and responsible program manager) --a description of the nature and resource requirements of the computer work to be performed -- a statement of the relevance to the seasonal-to-interannual climate prediction problem Send applications to Meg Austin, UCAR Office of Programs, Visiting Scientist Programs (see page 15). Successful applicants will be asked to complete a user profile and sign a memorandum of understanding that describes the conditions under which they can use the NCEP computer. Each effort will run for six months and can be renewed for a second six months upon request. Renewal for a second year will require another application to UCAR.
