UC-San Diego study

Phillips, D.P., Kanter, K.J., Bednarczyk, B., and Tastad, P., 1991: The importance of the lay press in the transmission of medical knowledge to the scientific community. New England Journal of Medicine 325(16), 1180-1183.

The authors examined the number of citations received by articles in the New England Journal of Medicine when they were also covered by the New York Times. Articles given coverage in the Times received 73% more citations than those not covered. To control for scientific importance, the researchers also counted the number of citations of NEJM articles during a three-month strike at the Times in 1978. (During the strike, the Times issued an edition of record but did not distribute newspapers to the public.) Articles covered during the strike were never cited as often as articles covered in regular editions distributed to the public. (UC Davis Public Communications office.)
