BOULDER -- The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) is the metropolitan Denver sponsor for the 1998-99 Bayer/NSF Award for Community Innovation. The $25,000 award challenges teams of middle- school students to identify issues in their local communities and then use the scientific method to solve them. For the third year, Bayer Corporation, the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation, and Discover magazine are national sponsors of the award.

The Bayer/NSF Award encourages youth with diverse backgrounds, interests, and abilities to develop curiosity, creativity, teamwork, critical thinking, and citizenship while working within a framework of scientific discovery. Winners from ten regions will travel to Epcot at Walt Disney World in Florida this spring to compete in the national finals. A team from Summit Middle School in Boulder went to Epcot to represent the western region in the finals last year.

How to enter

Proposals for the Bayer/NSF Award for Community Innovation for the 1998- 99 school year are due January 31. Teams of four middle-school students and an adult coach can get information and an application by calling 1-800-291-6020 or visiting the award's home page. NCAR will provide scientific mentors and links to community organizations for local teams that request NCAR sponsorship. For sponsorship information, call NCAR's Outreach Program at 303-497-8612.

NCAR is sponsored by NSF and managed by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, a consortium of more than 60 universities offering Ph.D.s in atmospheric and related sciences.
