NCAR Sponsors Bayer/NSF Community Innovation Award
BOULDER -- The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) is the metropolitan Denver sponsor for the 1998-99 Bayer/NSF Award for Community Innovation. The $25,000 award challenges teams of middle- school students to identify issues in their local communities and then use the scientific method to solve them. For the third year, Bayer Corporation, the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation, and Discover magazine are national sponsors of the award.
The Bayer/NSF Award encourages youth with diverse backgrounds, interests, and abilities to develop curiosity, creativity, teamwork, critical thinking, and citizenship while working within a framework of scientific discovery. Winners from ten regions will travel to Epcot at Walt Disney World in Florida this spring to compete in the national finals. A team from Summit Middle School in Boulder went to Epcot to represent the western region in the finals last year.
