Physical Origin of Solar Variations

A complete study of solar variability must link a theoretical understanding of both global and localized solar features to high-quality, long-duration observational programs. One important observational effect must be noted: as magnetic activity on the Sun increases (i.e., more sunspots and faculae), so does the total solar irradiance. To understand solar climate, this type of relationship must be explained in terms of physical processes occurring on, or within, the Sun.
