This discussion of El Niño, the Peruvian anchovy fishery, and the impact of El Niño on the fishery involve elements of meteorology, physical oceanography, biology, ecology, political science, economics, and fisheries management. The topic is broad and interdisciplinary. The impacts of El Niño on the Peruvian anchovy and consequent societal adaptations are a case study of direct relevance to the issue of global change. They exemplify both the physical and social changes, sometimes disruptive, associated with changes in climate.
